LYNTON has been added to the county council's list of primary routes for gritting.

County councillor Andrea Davis told Lynton and Lynmouth Town Council that the isolated village, which is routinely cut off during heavy snow, was "very lucky" to be added to the primary routes.

Lorries previously have gritted the A39 down through Lynbridge, missing Lynton altogether.

Cllr Davis said: "While Devon is fine, as far as salt stocks are concerned, we have been told that in line with Government guidelines, no secondary routes are being gritted at all.

"During the recent heavy snow, Devon was well stocked with salt and even loaned supplies to Torbay and Gloucester, which now have to be restored.

"The county has since had its supplies replenished, but secondary routes across the country are not being gritted."
