Action plan to cut air pollution at traffic bottleneck in Braunton needs your feedback

People are being invited to give their opinion on a package of measures designed to reduce congestion and improve air quality in a North Devon community.

The document, which has been produced by North Devon Council with input from county highways, seeks to address pollution issues in the town of Braunton.

It follows recordings of nitrogen dioxide in the village above threshold levels set down in legislation.

The centre of Braunton is a bottleneck for traffic, particularly in the summer.

An action plan which sets out ten possible options to improve the situation, went out for public consultation on Thursday. The consultation period runs up to April 30.

Andy Cole, environmental protection technical officer for North Devon Council, said: "The purpose of the consultation is to invite comments from the public and stakeholders and also to see if anybody has got other ideas we haven't thought of that we could consider further. It is important we get that feedback from the community.

"Following the consultation we will then sit down and go through any ideas that have been submitted and evaluate them to work out whether they can be included in the final action plan.

"The final action plan will then be prepared and submitted to Defra.

"Defra will then report back and advise us whether or not they accept what we have submitted and over the next 12 to 18 months we will be looking in detail at all the options and any other ideas before we decide on which ones we are going to implement."

Councillor Derrick Spear said: "This is clearly a major issue in Braunton, totally related to the increasing traffic congestion we suffer, and an issue which is not going to go away."
