Anti-culling groups unite in opposition
Wildlife and animal welfare organisations, including the Badger Trust, the Wildlife Trusts and the RSPCA remain fiercely opposed to a cull.
They argue vaccinating badgers and ensuring better "biosecurity" on farms to keep animals away from cattle and their feed is the way forward.
On the eve of yesterday's announcement, the Badger Trust claimed the Government's approach was "guesswork-led", arguing that the "public and farmers are being hoodwinked, patronised and ignored".
It said: "This is yet another public relations disaster for an error-prone Government whose half-truths are continuing to deceive the cattle industry."
Campaign group 38 Degrees, influential in halting the Government's plans to sell-off publicly-owned forests, has indicated its opposition.

“As one MP stated in the 'culling of badgers' debate in Parliament this week, -- Scotland has no TB infected cattle, -- there is a lesson to be learned here, -- another MP is concerned that due to the movement of cattle TB infected cattle are now in Cumbria.”
