A fire at a North Devon school may have been started deliberately.

The blaze damaged a large shed at Chelfham Mill School at Chelfham, near Barnstaple.

Fire crews from Barnstaple and Braunton were called to the incident at around 8pm last night. A water foam carrier and additional staff from South Molton were also requested.

Fire fighters wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reels and a jet to extinguish the blaze.

The large storage shed attached to the school was severely damaged, said firefighters.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was believed to be arson.

Police also attended the fire.

Chelfham Mill School is described as an independent special school.

According to Ofsted the school has 37 pupils aged seven to 19.

It educates pupils with emotional, behavioural and social difficulties.

Fees range from £29,361 for day pupils to £53,775 for boarders.

In September 2008 the school was evacuated after a fire started in a bedroom. Nobody was injured.

“i have just read this story and the comments. I am deeply saddened by a couple of the comments. My husband went to this school and is now in a well paid job, pays taxes, has NEVER claimed social security, never commited crime and has two well adjusted children. He actually tells people that the school was the best thing that happened to him and his life. So before people judge the children in the school maybe they should look at the system in which children do not get the help they fully need.”

“The children and young people at this school are amazing individuals. They are strong and have survived trauma in their lives I would not wish upon any child. People should be proud that the tax payers' money is going towards helping these children. They didn't choose to have these horrendous things happen to them in their lives and I think schools like this are amazing places for offering these children a chance to turn their lives around and experience a little love and support for once. Many of these children probably haven't even got families to go home to, have been abandoned, abused and witnessed things most of us (thankfully) have never had to witness. Give them a break, they deserve it and besides, their 'naughty' behaviour is often a way they learn to survive.”

“It deeply sadens me to think that there are still people in this world like Eddie. If you could live one day in the life of one of these kids you would change your veiw very quicky. I have worked with some of the children and young people at this school and continue to work with disadvantaged and abused children and young people now. Given the chance and support many of the these young people actually go on to work in society to give back the TAX as you call it and the help they recieved in their younger years. This school in particular and others like it have played a big part in my life and I will defend them to the hilt from small minded people like Eddie. Throughout my behaviour training I was taught that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Well done Eddie you've just got yours!!”

“Not directly related to the original story just to a previous poster LOL - Has the "Big" boss ever grown up? Some people use excuses to last a lifetime others well they just get on with it really! The prisons are full of people with excuses and blame elsewhere does anyone actually ever hold their hands up for their actions or is it always down to someone else? A general question when do people grow out of blaming and just get on with it. "Big" boss is everything that has every happened to you someone elses fault? Really its only an observation based on reading many posts on many different stories!”

“These kids deserve as much chance of an education as anyone else, but the fees are huge considering the taxpayer has to foot the bill.”

“Well said Jenny! If people even had half an idea what has happened to some of these children then it may open up their eyes somewhat!”

“I'These are not 'naughty children' they are children that have experienced severe challenges in their young lives. There are a variety of reasons for children attending this school. I as a working person am more than happy to pay for these schools, i feel it is more benefical to society than paying for pot holes in the road!. Are people saying that it is ok to have a school for naughty children if their in wheelchairs? these children are disabaled but not in the physical sense. Its down to small minded, stupid ignorant people, that have no idea what horrific things happen to children on a daily basis THAT CONTRIBUTE TO ABUSE!!!! which lead to the need of theses schools.”

“It's not the kids fault they are at the school. Many different and complex circumstances make them what they are.”

“It is a school for children "excluded" from other schools for bad behaviour and the parents don't pay the fees - we the taxpayers do! Costs us a fortune to look after these badly behaved kids - yet our own kids have to take their education in classes of 30+ - and do they are not disabled children just naughty - a teacher for every few children as well.....”
