Artist and Writers in unique gathering at the Burton in Bideford

BIdeford's Burton Art Gallery is to bring together academics, writers, artists, researchers, students and those who share a love of illustrated writings to debate and discuss the unique relationship formed between artists and writers. 

The symposium is inspired by the exhibition of works by printmaker and illustrator Leonard Baskin, currently on loan from Heritage Collections Department at the University of Exeter to the Burton, 29th September – 12th November.

Using the example of Baskin's working relationship with Ted Hughes as a starting point, the symposium will include a screening of Noel Chanan's film 'The Artist and the Poet: Leonard Baskin and Ted Hughes in conversation 1983'. Noel Chanan is one of the speakers at the symposium, Film-maker and Friend of Baskin and Hughes. Chanan was a frequent visitor to Leonard Baskin's studio at Lurley Manor in Devon. There, he was able to photograph Baskin at work and there he came to know Ted Hughes. The resulting documentary film is a rare and beautiful record of a remarkable friendship. 

The symposium features experts in their fields coming together to discuss the relationship between artists and writers, Chaired by Dominic Jinks, Head of Arts & Culture Services at the University of Exeter. Other Speakers are Graham Rawle, London based author, artist and designer, writer of Lost Consonant in The Guardian for 15 years. Rawle has published a number of books, including the collaged novel 'Woman's World' which won wide critical acclaim and his reinterpretation of the 'Wizard of Oz' won the Best Illustrated Trade Book award as well as 2009 book of the year at the British Book Design Awards.

Lee Brackstone will also be speaking, as Editorial Director at Faber & Faber, he has worked with a number of artist- writer collaborations over the years. Brackstone is interested in how the result of these collaborations can lead to artworks being created in their own right, in the form of illustrated books producing a unique product in the age of the 'e' book. 

The final speaker is Gill Saunders, a writer, lecturer and broadcaster, and currently Senior Curator in the Word & Image Department of the Victoria & Albert Museum, where she is a specialist in 20th-century and contemporary prints and drawings. Her publications include Picturing Plants: An Analytical History of Botanical Illustration (1995), Prints Now: Directions and Definitions (V&A, 2006; with Rosie Miles), and Recording Britain (V&A, 2011), a series of essays on 20th-century and contemporary representations of the English landscape. She is the author of the Afterword to the facsimile edition of High Street by J. M. Richards and Eric Ravilious which was recently published by the V&A. As such, Gill is perfectly placed to describe the unique relationship between the artist and the writer. 

Miranda Clarke, Visual Arts Manager at the Burton adds that "the relationship between Hughes and Baskin was so crucial in the production of their art forms and the opportunity to explore and dissect the art of collaboration from the viewpoint of such experts in their field is an opportunity not to be missed by the Burton."

The symposium will take place at the Burton, in the main galleries alongside the Baskin exhibition on Monday 12th November 2012, starting with registration at 10am. The fee is £40 full cost or £30 concession (over 60, student ID and Friend of the Burton) and includes refreshments and a light lunch. Booking is essential, places limited to 40.
