AVONMOUTH Old Boys adapted better to difficult conditions as they came from behind to beat Barnstaple 25-24 in National Three south west.

Barum led Saturday's match in Bristol 17-5 at half time but they let that lead go in a second-half performance described as awful by director of rugby Kevin Squire.

Despite going back ahead in the closing stages with a Linford Brock try, converted by Luke Berry, they were beaten by a late penalty from Avonmouth's Joe Wearne, playing against his former club.

Squire said: "There was very little quality from either side, mainly because of the conditions. It was an awful pitch and it was freezing cold.

"We dominated at scrum time but our lineout didn't function very well, which was down to the conditions.

"We started really strongly but in the second half they had the advantage of the wind and slope and seemed to get on the front foot.

"They got an early try, that gave them momentum and they had too much for us. We played awful in the second half."

It was a third successive away defeat for Barnstaple, who are eighth in the table. They have won their last three home games and host third-placed Weston-super-Mare at Pottington Road on Saturday (2.30pm).
