Bad parking is still a problem, warn villagers
FEEDBACK from residents who attended the traffic consultation in Combe Martin has now been released.
Devon County Council, the police and Combe Martin Parish Council invited villagers to raise concerns about parking during a one-day event in November.
A summary of responses shows 21 people complained about "bad parking" including obscuring visibility, overstaying time limits, parking on double yellow lines and pavements or in front of entrances.
A total of 15 householders suggested the coach park next to the Pack O' Cards is used for public car parking.
There were 56 comments concerning parking affecting traffic flow, which included 10 relating to the bottle neck at Borough Road and 16 objecting to parked cars outside the Bottom George.
In all, 13 people wanted more car parks, 11 asked for cheaper parking and five wanted the season tickets to be usable in all car parks.
A further 25 people complained about speeding with five people asking for an extension to the 30 mph zone. Six villagers asked for traffic calming, provided it did not involve speed humps.
A total of 12 residents called for the bus stop at Borough Road to be moved back to Seaside Hill on the inward route and 21 said that in general the bus timetables were wrong.
Devon County Council is now proposing several changes to parking layouts in Combe Martin following the consultation in November.
Residents were due to hear about the potential schemes at a public meeting in the village hall last night, which will be reported on in next week's
Journal
.
The county council is looking at changing seasonal parking areas in the village so the same rules apply all year round.
James Anstee, area engineer for Devon County Council, said: "The general view is that seasonal parking is not as essential because there is not a massive influx of people in the summer as there was before.
"A lot of the problems with parking apply all year round."
Devon County Council also plans to change the layout of coach and disabled parking arrangements on the seafront which Mr Anstee said residents felt was "creating conflict".
Several of the 30 minute parking bays in the High Street could also have restrictions lifted. The bays outside the post office and library would still have waiting restrictions.

“I agree with the below comments, the meeting was extremely well chaired, very well attended, very informative and productive.
Good results and changes now due.
It was also very well reported by the Journal, as I did not have pen and paper to write notes.
Thanks where thanks is due to Andrea Davies County Clr and the Highways man, called James and the police for their input.
This sort of meeting was long overdue and congratulations to those whose put it all together.
Ironic though to see so many cars outside the village hall parked on the pavements and double yellow lines.
For I think her name was Mrs Druice there is the proof of a big parking problem in the village.
Lets see more prepared and constructive meetings like this in Combe Martin Village Hall please.
Well done.”
