Shoppers flocked to the town’s store in Roundswell over the weekend in search of a bargain as the store announced hugely discounted prices in a ‘closing down’ sale.

The electrical retailer, which is being run by administrators Deloitte, was placed into administration on Friday, November 2.

Administrators could not confirm how many jobs would be lost as a result of the closure of Barnstaple’s Comet but said, on a national scale, there would “inevitably” be redundancies.

People took to Twitter to share the news of the electrical retailer’s closure.

@jamiecpow wrote: “Comet store shutting today staff have been told #badnews”.

Meanwhile, staff member @mikelessiter94 wrote: “Team Barnstaple are the best and it's been a blast! It just sucks that it had to end! Thank you for today and the last 2 years!! #Comet”

On Saturday, in a statement announcing the decision to close 41 Comet stores across the country, Chris Farrington, Joint Administrator, said: “We are very grateful to the Company’s employees for their professionalism, loyalty and support at this difficult time and all employees will of course continue to be paid for all the work they do while the Company is in Administration.”

Administrators said they would look to redeploy staff from any stores which face closure to other stores nearby.

The store’s closure comes just days after it was announced Roundswell’s Staple’s store would also close in January.
