Police said no weapons were involved and none of the students suffered serious injuries in the ruckus, although one boy sustained grazes.

A spokeswoman from Petroc confirmed the college had handed over CCTV footage of the incident to officers.

She said: “We can confirm there was an altercation at the entrance to Petroc’s Barnstaple Campus this morning.

“Staff dealt with the incident swiftly, ensuring the college’s safeguarding procedures were followed.

“The safety of our students is of paramount importance to us and we are assisting the police in their investigations by providing the CCTV footage to aid this process.”

Students began tweeting about the incident after police arrived.

@kyrieleonard said: "Police everywhere... Wander what's going down in college! #ooohh"

@JPearce7 said: "4 police cars serious?! #overthetop"

Police said officers are carrying out local enquiries to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
