Barnstaple High Street Tesco Express plans approved by North Devon Council
PLANS for a new Tesco Express on Barnstaple High Street have been given the green light by North Devon Council.
The plans, which will see the retail giant knock through two High Street properties, were approved last week after being submitted a week before Christmas.
Barnstaple Town Council recommended the plans be refused by North Devon Council, on grounds the shop front would be out of keeping with the rest of the High Street, and because of its fears there would be a loss of "individual shop frontage".
And two members of the public wrote to the council to object to the plans.

“So how can Tesco open up their third store in Barnstaple, a store a few doors away from the corner shop, a few metres walk away from the Co-Op, yet Asda can't get planning approved for an old run down unit out of town?! Back handers anyone?! Total monopoly by Tesco, since when was North Devon Council sponsored by Tesco...”
