The visitors, who had lost only once before this afternoon's game, posed a tough, physical test.

But on a heavy pitch they tired in the second half and Barnstaple took their opportunities.

Chippenham took the lead on 17 minutes after a long spell of pressure ended with hooker John Turner scoring in the right-hand corner. Harry Taylor, the fly half, converted.

Having made poor starts in defeats to Weston-super-Mare and Brixham, Barnstaple might have been jittery.

Instead, they responded well with Josh Squire kicking a penalty on 22 minutes then, in first-half stoppage time, flanker Winston James pouncing on a loose ball to race clear and score a try. Squire's conversion gave his side a 10-7 half-time lead.

They thoroughly deserved to extend that advantage in an impressive second-half performance.

Brock, the left wing, charged down a kick to score his first try after four minutes and got the second five minutes from time when he sprinted on to Luke Berry's chip.

Squire added the conversion to a penalty kicked on 56 minutes.

Chippenham lock Sam Hill crashed over for a try from the final play.

Bideford's game against Kingsbridge in Tribute Western Counties (west) was postponed with parts of the King George's Field pitch left under water by the heavy rain. Bude lost 20-13 at home to Ivybridge.
