Barnstaple shop worker injured after challenging suspected shoplifter

A store worker who challenged a suspected shoplifter in Wilkinsons in Barnstaple on Saturday afternoon was rugby-tackled to the ground and left suffering back pain.

Police said the 23-year-old man, a sales assistant at the High Street store, challenged the suspected shoplifter just after 4pm and was “rugby-tackled” to the ground.

Officers said the victim suffered lower back pain but had no visible injuries.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said two suspects, both male teenagers, had been sought and were due to be questioned in connection with the incident.
