Barren run is over as Combe sink Bluebirds
COMBE MARTIN found the perfect way to end a run of six games without a win in the Journal League Premier Division.
The one-time leaders tasted victory for the first time since early October when Simon Townsend and Graham Coomber earned a 2-1 success against Ilfracombe Town.
Although the Bluebirds pulled one back in the closing stages through Joe Alcock, the Combe Martin defence — led by the excellent Will Lovett — were rewarded for a much-improved performance.
A second defeat on the trot has given Combe a dose of Premier Division reality and suddenly Boca Seniors have moved within striking distance.
The champions battled past a hard-working but inexperienced Georgeham side, taking the lead when Richard Shannon pounced 20 minutes in.
Responding well, the Hammers hit back with an awesome 30-yard chip from Ross Bishop before a brace from the ever-dependable Matt Deakin gave them a lesson in finishing.
Barnstaple AAC front pair Scott Sharp and Greg Holland provided a constant threat in the 2-1 win against Braunton.
Sharp's free-kick was cancelled out by a Jez Hill own goal, but wing-back Ronnie Richmond popped up with a late winner to give in-form Ammies their fifth straight win.
How Morwenstow have missed last year's top scorer Noah Evans.
The speedy striker was back from injury to open the scoring in Saturday's precious 5-4 victory against Hartland.
Tom Haley and Jamie Etherington were also on target in the first half, while Hartland hit back from 2-0 down thanks to Danny Gifford, Jack Coleman and a 25-yard shot from Richard Bissett which looped in off defender Rob Tape.
Two goals from Paul Jenkin finally gave the Greens a cushion and they held out to move off the foot of the table after Richard Davey's strike set up a tense finish.
Morwenstow love to do things the entertaining way — their only previous win was a 6-5 success against Dolton.
Despite slipping to the bottom of the table, Hartland boss Ian Pillman is optimistic his side can move away from danger if they show similar passion in the coming weeks.
Tom Marsh rounded the goalkeeper to tuck in a late equaliser for North Molton at Shamwickshire.
Kevin Buck turned in James Downing's corner to give Shammy a first-half lead.
In the Senior Division, Torrington extended their winning run to 15 games with a hard-fought 3-0 triumph over Northam Lions.
The runaway leaders never found top gear but went ahead after five minutes when pacy frontman Danny Jenkins tapped home.
Trevor May doubled the lead on 40 minutes with a tidy finish following good work by Tom Hayne down the right.
And Jenkins completed the win with a neat finish after an excellent cross-field pass by left-back Dean Johns.
It was all over by half-time at Barnstaple AAC, where Braunton wrapped up a 4-0 victory through Louis Murrell (two), Matt Hunt and Sam Box.
