The try, converted by Berry, was a rare example of running rugby during a fractious second half.
Tempers flared in the closing stages with Winton James, the home captain, and Joshua Stevens, the Old Pats second row, both shown yellow cards.
But despite a late try from Henry Tapsell, converted by Gwilliam, Barnstaple held out for the win which strengthens their grip on eighth place, moving them seven points ahead of Old Patesians in the table.
Bideford earned a fourth successive win in Tribute Western Counties (west). They won 30-8 at home to Truro with tries from Dave Evans, Simon Bright, James Buckland and Chris Snell. Pat Sanders kicked two penalties and two conversions.
In the same division, Bude drew 21-21 at home to Wellington, while, in Devon One, South Molton defeated New Cross 16-15 and Torrington had a walkover against Dartmouth, who could not raise a side. In Devon Two, Ilfracombe lost 29-0 at Plymouth Argaum.
