BIDEFORD College won the annual Stephens Shield cross country competition at Torrington.

A team of 55 runners represented the college, with every finisher counting towards the overall result.

The event, organised by Great Torrington School, featured teams of at least five girls and five boys from Years 7, 8 and 9, as well as a combined Year 10 and 11 squad.

For the Bideford girls, Daniella Jewell and Zo Gardner were first and second in the Year 10/11 group and all the Year 9 girls finished in the top 12.

Molly Pennington was fourth in Year 7 and Nancy Pennington fifth in Year 9.

For the boys, Finlay Mathers was third in Year 7, Bobby Talbot-Adams was third in Year 9 and Scott Braunton and Levi Colvin were fifth and sixth in Year 10/11.

From the five schools with full teams, Braunton Academy were second and the Park Community School third.

More than 350 primary schoolchildren competed in a cross country meeting at the Park Community School, Barnstaple.

Newport Primary School led the way after the meeting for Year 3 and 4 pupils with Kitty Sampson, Lois Nicholl and Olivia Skinner taking a one-two-three in the Year 3 girls' race.

Cohen Phillips (Year 3) and Sam Copsey (Year 4) secured wins for Landkey in the boys' races and Lucy Phillips, of Orchard Vale, triumphed in the Year 4 girls.

A second meeting for Year 5 and 6 children will take place on November 13 and the scores from both events will count towards the shield for the overall winners.
