“You have at last realised what you did and have started the process of fronting up to it. I am going to put this case off for reports.

“Your plea has come so late in the day I cannot promise you any credit or discount on the sentence but that does not automatically mean you will go to prison.”

Baker is a former employee of the Morrison store in Bideford and the incident happened after as colleague offered him a lift home.

The workmate was attacked en route and jumped out of his car to escape the assault. Baker then drove off in it.

The alarm was raised when the bloodstained victim, still wearing his Morrison’s uniform, flagged down two passers-by and asked them to call the police. The car was recovered later when Baker was arrested in Surrey.

The full facts of the case are due to be opened when the case is sentenced at Exeter next month.
