Bideford beaten by Hitchin Town in Evo-Stik League Southern premier division
BIDEFORD were beaten 1-0 at Hitchin Town in the Evo-Stik League Southern premier division this afternoon.
Liam Toomey scored the winner early in the second half, lifting Hitchin out of the relegation zone.
Sean Downing and Matt Hockley were denied by home goalkeeper Martin Bennett in the first ten minutes and Kevin Squire failed to get hold of a cross from Downing.
After an encouraging start, Bideford struggled to create chances and both teams battled with the heavy conditions.

Toomey took the ball past goalkeeper Tim Sandercombe and trickled a shot in off the post to put Hitchin ahead in the 52nd minute.
They went close to adding a second moments later when John Frendo was denied by a save Sandercombe.
Karl Baker, the loan signing from Torquay United, made his debut for Bideford on the left of midfield.
Saul Halpin, also on loan from Torquay, went on in the second half and picked out Rob Farkins who saw a powerful shot saved.
Hitchin held out for a win which moved them up four places to 17th. Bideford remain in 15th place, eight points clear of the relegation zone.
