A FIRST-HALF goal from Matt Andrew was not enough for Bideford in a 3-1 defeat at Bedford Town.

Andrew latched on to a back heel from Kevin Squire to clip the opening goal but the Robins were punished for defensive mistakes in the Evo-Stik League Southern game.

Goalkeeper Darren Rose did his best to limit the damage but could do nothing to prevent goals from Pete Sheppard (two), Jordan Metters (two), Billy Downes, Will Hailston (two) and Rob Smart (three).

Ollie Knowles, Kyle Bassett (penalty) and Stuart Cameron scored for the visitors.

Ilfracombe Town, the cup winners in 2011, started this season's bid with a 2-1 extra-time win at Wells City thanks to Ed Yeo's double strike. The match was goalless after 90 minutes.
