PLANS to make Jubilee Square the heart of Bideford and ban cars from Cooper Street have received overwhelming support.

Some 150 people went to a public exhibition of the plans, which could be the first area of Bideford to be redeveloped.

The Joint Delivery Team (JDT), which is part of North Devon+, is now focusing on securing the funding in order for the plans to go ahead.

Peter Quincey from the team is confident the work to make Jubilee Square an open space and to resurface and pedistrianise Cooper Street.

He said: "People showed an overwhelming support for the plans for this area and many thought the plans didn't go far enough.

"Some people suggested totally pedestrianising Manor car park and the Square, which could be something to consider in the future."

He said he hoped work would begin in the Autumn — so not to detract from the area's appearance in the summer.

“I hope the development will encompass the closure of that flea pit of a discotheque where the old arcades used to be. But those asking for full pedestrian access must remember there are two taxis offices there, and that shops still require goods delivered, and collected from time to time.”
