A blood and organ courier for Devon Free Wheelers is recovering this week after being involved in a crash on the A361 North Devon link road on Friday night.

Police are investigating the collision which occurred at around 8.30pm at Ash Mill Hill, near South Molton.

Free Wheelers press officer Jono Board said volunteer rider Mick Scaife was left heavily bruised after coming off his Honda 1100 bike, as he travelled towards South Molton Hospital to collect blood and urine samples from kidney dialysis patients.

Mr Board said Mick was forced to lay his bike down whilst still moving in order to avoid colliding with a white Ford Transit Van which was attempting to perform a U-turn.

He said: "The van had stalled on the wrong side of the road and Mick's only option was to lay the bike down and roll off it.

"The bike didn't hit the van and after rolling a few times Mick got up and walked towards the van.

"We think the driver saw his uniform and marked bike and drove off."

He said Mick was left heavily bruised, grazed and shaken up after the incident. His bike was deemed a write-off.

Devon Free Wheelers chairman Dan Lavery said everyone involved with the organisation was concerned about Mick.

"We have a Land Rover recovery vehicle so as soon as I got the call I headed out to the scene," he said.

"The worst thing about it was there was no mobile signal there and the SOS phone which was right by the scene of the crash was switched off.

"Mick and the teenage girl and her mother who witnessed the crash had no way of calling the police."

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed a collision investigation team were looking into the incident.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact police, on the non-emergency number 101, citing log number 775 of Friday.

“Oh and Mick, I hope you have a good Christmas and that this coward of a van driver doesn't need your VOLUNTARY assistance over the Christmas period.”

“So this white van man not only does a manoeuvre in the road causing an accident, the coward then leaves the person involved in the accident to fend for himself. I can only say well done to Mick. the biker, for his quick thinking.....it could have been so much worse.”
