Boy in hospital after falling on Combe Martin rocks
AN 11-YEAR-OLD boy who fell on rocks near Combe Martin was flown to hospital with suspected spinal injuries.
Both the RAF Chivenor's search and rescue helicopter and the Devon Air Ambulance were called out to help the boy at 4pm on Sunday afternoon.
The boy, who was said to be in a stable condition, and his dad were flown to North Devon District Hospital.
Sergeant Martin Seward from Chivenor's 22 Squadron A Flight said the boy had fallen on rocks to the east of the beach.
The Air Ambulance had arrived before Chivenor's crew, but were unable to reach the boy.
Chivenor then put the boy in a stretcher and winched the boy up from the rocks before taking him to hospital.
Sgt Seward said: "This was a really good team effort between us and the Devon Air Ambulance.
"The Air Ambulance is faster and can get to casualties quicker to start work, but our helicopter is able to winch and is bigger."
Fire fighters also attended to assist with the rescue.
