Brixham rugby coach Dan Parkes has plan to see Exmouth come unstuck

Brixham coach Dan Parkes has a game plan to prise Exmouth's grip off the Devon Cup in tomorrow's quarter-final clash with the Cockles on the Imperial Ground.

Exmouth beat Brixham 28-15 in last seasons' final to win the cup – and turned them over again 24-21 two weeks ago in a league match.

Parkes has seen enough of Exmouth to know where their strengths lie, and intends staying away from them for a change.

"Exmouth play a basic game relying on forward domination through a big pack of forwards," said Parkes.

"To threaten them we have to rely on our athleticism and run them around the pitch."

Exmouth won the league game 24-21, but are well aware Brixham feel hard done by and intend doing something about it. "It is going to be a tough game and we will be ready for one," said Exmouth coach Jon Hill.

"Opening our defence of the Devon Cup is the first of three huge games for us one after the other. Coming next are Weston and London Irish, who are second and top in our division, so there is no let up.

"We take the cup very seriously so there will be no weakening of our side."

Barnstaple are well aware a banana skin is waiting for them at Torquay Athletic, who are two divisions lower on the league ladder.

"If we win everyone expects it – and not only that we will be expected to win well and won't get any credit for it," said director of rugby Kevin Squire.

"I would like to think we can beat at team from two divisions lower, but we won't be taking Torquay at all lightly.

"In my ten years doing this job we have not messed up in the cup against real underdogs – and I don't intend to start now. "One or two players deserve a rest but they will only be resting on the bench."

Newton Abbot will not be taking Cullompton lightly at Rackerhayes.

"The cup has always been important to Newton Abbot as there is a lot of prestige in winning it," said director of rugby Roy Henderson.

"We would like to progress through to the semi-finals, but we won't do that if we take the game lightly."

Sidmouth have a point to prove when they welcome Paignton in the cup.

The Green Machine took a 31-15 tanning at Paignton earlier in the season, and are still smarting from it.

"As we owe Paignton one for the defeat at their place, it would be nice to do it this week," said coach Jason Luff.
