Broomhayes School at Bideford to undergo £2.3 million redevelopment
A £2.3 MILLION development of a Bideford school has been given the go-ahead.
Broomhayes School and Children's Centre in East-the-Water is an all year round residential and day school managed by the National Autistic Society.

The project will also see new bedrooms, taking student numbers up from 26 to 31.

Broomhayes aims to provide children with autism with an education “tailored to the individual needs and abilities of each child and young person, enabling them to develop their potential in preparation for adult life.”
The school already has a centre in an Old Rectory in Northam for post-16 education, which will be replaced.
The development will also include a new training room, which will be used by Broomhayes staff and hopefully the wider community. Libraries and study rooms are also included in the plans, and the school is hoping to refurbish some of the older rooms on site.
Principal, Marcia Vallely,, said the new building would help those students, many of which have problems travelling between the two sites.
She said: “The new building will be purpose-made and enable the children to get ready for their adult lives.
“Post-16 education for the children include things such as relationship building, citizenship and meal making. The redevelopment will incorporate things, such as kitchens, to aid this.
“This is an exciting project for the school and the students and the redevelopment will have an impact on these children's lives.”
Both the buildings will be 21st century, spacious, light and give students their own living area. The building will be as eco-friendly as possible and use local contractors.
Broomhayes, which is one of six NAS schools in the country, is hoping to start the redevelopment in September and for it to be complete by autumn 2009.
