CCTV sees Barnstaple teenager dealing in Sticklepath play park

A TEEN who was dealing drugs in a children's play park was caught red handed by CCTV cameras, a court has heard.

The 17-year-old Barnstaple boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sent coded messages to his friends saying he had quantities of "Jack Flash" and "Bubblegum" for sale.

The teenager pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply and possession of 29 tablets of diazepam at North Devon Youth Court.

The court heard police were monitoring CCTV footage of a park in Sticklepath in Barnstaple when they saw the transaction take place.

Jonathan Barnes, for the prosecution, said: "The defendant rode his bike into the park and exchanged packages with two boys aged 14 and 18.

"Police later spoke to the boys and found them both in possession of cannabis.

"Officers attended the defendant's address and found him in possession of around £10 worth of cannabis. They also found £30 worth of skunk cannabis and 29 diazepam pills under his bed."

Tony Dart, for the defence, said the boy would sell small amounts of cannabis to friends to fund his own habit.

He said: "A lot of young people smoke cannabis and don't realise it is an offence. He is one of these individuals. This might be the wake up call he needs."

Presiding magistrate Ian Kingsbury said the court could not rule out a custodial sentence. The case was adjourned until February 19 so the Youth Offending Team could compile a full report on the teen.
