COMEDY REVIEW: Jon Richardson at Devon Hall
JON Richardson set out to put the murky minutia of his mind under the microscope in this highly introspective gig. Nothing was too personal, intimate, trivial or revealing to magnify with his comedy lens.
Now, Richardson is clearly afflicted by an internal devil; it's the demon of perfection who constantly pours forth a running commentary in his head. Most of us, of course, try to ignore or repress it. This is the niggling voice that nags you about your failure to carry out mundane domestic chores. Strangely, (and I will admit to my own sexism here), I thought it was a voice that only women could hear. Surely, only the female of the species could relate to the phrase: "Nobody is going to want a relationship with me if I don't mange to disinfect all these skirting boards?" Surely, only women would find themselves having to resist the internal meltdown that threatens when the washing up is done in the wrong order or the recycling has been put in the wrong bin? "I'd rather do it myself," wailed Richardson. Looking around the room, were my observations wrong, in noticing it was mainly women who were laughing at and relating to these obsessions? Yes sometimes our humdrum lives are pretty full of petty provocations and it's cathartic to laugh about it.

INTERNAL DEVIL: Jon Richardson, the perfectionist comic.
Richardson takes his fixation with life's details to even greater extremes: there's a right way to eat an apple, the perfect way to wrap up your packed lunch.
At other times, we watched that inner demon berating him about how the gig was going: his self-deprecating, self analysis of his own performance swerved between entertaining and excruciatingly embarrassing.

Apparently, when Richardson heard he was going to perform at Devon Hall he was impressed. "Imagine the history of that place", he said to himself. Devon Hall is, in fact, North Devon newest venue for comedy, theatre and music. And, while it doesn't have the unbeatable intimate atmosphere of The Plough, it is a fantastically modern, purpose-built performance space which can cater for up to 450 people and it's well worth checking out for future gigs which include Michael Roach and Russell Kane. HORRIFICALLY SEXIST. Seriously? You acknowledge your sexism but carry on as an ignorant fool. Realizing something is sexist, is when you stop, full stop.”
