Police confirmed one casualty had been taken to North Devon District Hospital by ambulance, although it is unclear at this stage which vehicle they were travelling in.

Police confirmed the three vehicles involved in the crash were a Renault Mégane convertible, registered to an address in Winkleigh, a Renault Kangoo, also registered to an address in Winkleigh and a VW Golf, registered to Umberleigh.

One fire crew from Barnstaple attended the scene and made the vehicles safe.

The A377 was blocked in both directions between Chapelton and the Atherington junction for a couple of hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said the road had to be closed for "some time" due to oil and debris across the carriageway.

The road was reopened by 7pm after the spillages were cleared and all the vehicles were recovered.
