A driver had a lucky escape after a car skidded on black ice and veered off the A377 and into a hedge near Lapford earlier this morning.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene at around 7am after the red Fiat, which is registered to an address in Chulmleigh, crashed.

Police said a motorist who was following the car rang 999 after seeing it ‘disappear’ off the road.

When emergency service crews arrived they described the car as overturned, nose down with only the rear wheels visible.

Officers said the car, which was travelling towards Barnstaple, skidded on black ice before careering through a hedge and overturning into a field.

An ambulance was called to the scene but the driver miraculously escaped with only minor injuries.

Paramedics checked the driver over at the scene but said they did not require hospital treatment.

Highways crews spent around two and a half hours recovering the vehicle.

At around the same time, police said a Renault Clio skidded on ice on the same stretch road and mounted a bank, taking out a fence in the process, before driving off.

The road was cleared by 9.20am, although ice remains a problem in the area.
