GPs and pharmacists across North Devon are urging carers of friends and loved ones to take advantage of free healthchecks made available to them by Devon County Council.

Currently one in ten people are providing care to family and friends, but only a small number have benefited from the free checks.

Carers can book the checks with their registered participating surgeries and re-claim the cost of someone looking after the person they care for whilst they attend.

NHS Devon and Devon County Council are concerned that many carers are neglecting their own health needs and are running the risk of developing serious health issues.

Lawrence Blanc, Pilot Sites Coordinator for Barnstaple, said: "The most difficult part of the programme is identifying carers and getting them to come forward."

Carer Lillian Quinn from Holsworthy said: "My advice to other carers is to do it. Take up these healthchecks."

A full list showing where the healthchecks are available can be found at www.devon.gov.uk.
