A CABIN in Bucks Mills is being brought back to life by the Appledore Arts Festival and the National Trust.

The cabin was used by artists, including Judith Ackland and Mary Stella Edwards, from the 1920s to the 1970s as an artistic retreat. It has been preserved almost exactly as the artists left it 30 years ago.

It overlooks Bideford Bay and has panoramic views of the dramatic coastline.

A panel giving information on the retreat has been placed at the site and a contemporary visual artist will be given the opportunity to use it for a two-week residency during May and June 2010.

It will be the first time the cabin has been used since the 1970s and the artists will host a talk about their experiences at the Appledore Visual Arts Festival taking place June 3 to 6.

Steve Mulberry, property manager said: "This is a unique opportunity to explore and be inspired by the Bucks Mills Cabin — it's a beautiful place, full of character and history with magical views, that is usually closed to the public."

Festival artistic director, Sandy Brown, added: "This residency is a fantastic chance for artists to work in a stunning coastal location and immerse themselves in the history of this inspiring artists studio.

"For most artists this is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Artists have until January 15 to apply via www.appledorearts.org/bucksmills.
