I WOULD like to correct an error which appeared in an article in the

Journal

(February 25) – 'North Devon Churches get grants to carry out crucial repair work'.

The report contains an inaccuracy about a grant given to St Mary's Church, High Bickington. This is not the fault of the

Journal

— the mistake was made in the English Heritage press release announcing the grants.

The amount of grant given to the church was indeed £148,000, but the grant will be used for re-roofing the church and not for repairs to the church tower as stated in the press release and article.

It is important to clarify this matter as the church and local community is working hard to raise vital funds towards the church tower repairs and we are anxious that people are aware that this part of the church repair programme is not being covered by the English Heritage and Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

I apologise for any confusion this has caused and would appreciate your help in clarifying this matter.

BECKY GRAHAM,

Press Officer,

English Heritage.
