Clarke retains North Devon title
THE NORTH Devon Open Golf Championship seems to bring the best out of Andrew Clarke.
One year on from his triumph at the Libbaton tournament, Clarke retained the title with another victory on his home course.
It was a great day for the High Bickington club with their players relishing the excellent conditions to claim the top three places.
Clarke's stableford score of 39 saw off the challenge of clubmate Brian Stevens by two points, while Andy Fence finished third with 36.
The charity event, staged for the 14th time by the Lions Club of South Molton, is estimated to have raised £1300 for the North Devon branch of Macmillan Nurses.
● Ilfracombe's Peter Hume has won the Devon County Golf Union Seniors' Scratch Championship.
A score of 111 (75 + 36) over 27 holes clinched the prestigious event at Exeter Golf and Country Club. Hume held his nerve to beat host club's Chris Horwill by one shot.
● Val Symons of Libbaton scored a nett 71 at Churston to win the Devon County Lady Veterans' Association competition for the second time in recent months.
Club mate Paula Wilsmore scored 72, finishing just behind.
● Golfers with a handicap of 18 or below are invited to enter the Devon County Golf Union's annual Handicap Championship at Tavistock on July 10 and 11.
After Friday's first round, the top 42 qualifiers go forward to the second round on Saturday afternoon.
Entries cost £25 and you can find out more by calling John Hirst on 01822 610640 or checking the website www.devongolfunion.org.uk
