THE following is a brief history of the major fires in Ilfracombe:
• August, 1983 – A fire at the Candar Hotel leaves one person dead and eight people injured.
• January, 2004 – 65 firefighters called to The Golden Coast Amusements on Wilder Road. The building, which had to be knocked down due to extensive damage, was empty at the time. Police suspect arson.
• November, 2004 – 70 firefighters are called to a blaze at the Cliffe Hydro Hotel. The building was empty at the time. Police suspect arson.

• March, 2005 – Six fire engines called to a blaze at the Cliffe Hydro Hotel. The building was empty at the time. Police suspect arson.
• February, 2006 – Three fire crews called to a fire at the Cliffe Hydro Hotel. The building was empty at the time. Police suspect arson.
• August, 2006 – More than 100 firefighters are called to a large blaze at the Montebello Hotel on Fore Street. The building was empty at the time. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze was suspicious.
• May, 2007 – 13 fire crews called to the Collingwood Hotel. The building was empty at the time. The fire was not treated as suspicious.
• November, 2007 – Nine fire engines were called to The Berkeley Hotel. The building was empty at the time.
• April, 2011 – Four fire crews called to a blaze at the Glen Tor Hotel. It is believed the cause of the fire was an electrical fault.
• December, 2011 – Eight fire engines and 50 firefighters called to a large fire at the Southcliffe Hotel at Torrs Park. Cause of the fire was not determined, though firefighters said arson was a possibility.
