THE pulling power of Verity has even managed to convince two lovebirds to seal the deal right under her nose.

Richard Pacy, 37, from Barnstaple proposed to his partner of two years, Letitia Andrews, 21, in front of the Damien Hirst statue last Friday.

Rather than go the conventional route of a romantic meal or an engagement under the stars, Richard decided to get down on one knee in front of the recently erected bronze statue.

"I thought Verity is awesome and rather than get engaged on the beach or something like that I would do it in front of her," he said. "I thought it was a bit more special. Also I've got a few friends in Ilfracombe.

He added: "I am over the moon. I knew she would say yes.

"Her smile is the best thing in the world.

"I had an MRI scan this morning at 8am and I went in to hospital wearing a suit. Letitia said 'why are you wearing that'."

The pier was busy with people when Andrew proposed and he said everyone cheered when Letitia said yes.

Despite the attention Verity has received recently, Richard said that some of his friends have not known what he is talking about when he tells them he proposed in front of her.

"A few people don't know who Verity is," he said.

"But most people say it is cool."

Letitia, a hairdresser from Cornwall, was in complete shock after the engagement, saying she was extremely happy and that Richard was simply "amazing"..

Richard said he had been planning the engagement for months but had only picked up the engagement ring the day before he popped the question.

The couple have known each other for 15 years. They started dating two years ago but split up briefly due to the distance between them.

But they got back together two months ago and have been quick to make it official this time around.

Richard met Letitia while working for her parents selling ice cream down in Cornwall and said that one day something just clicked between the two of them.

They now plan to get a flat together in North Devon where Richard works as a machine operator.

After the engagement the couple went for a drink at the Pier Tavern on the quay in Ilfracombe to celebrate the good news.

“Years ago, he did a cow and calf that he cut in half and put in formaldehyde. Maybe this time he couldn't find a willing volunteer, so had to make a statue instead!!”

“But a lot of people say they like it only because it is by some famous artist ( who I have never heard of before ) and by saying this they hope that other people might think they are the intellectual type.
In other words , showing off.”

“@flobberdob1 The statue may not be the fairest in the land. But no-one can deny it has brought loads of visitors to Ilfracombe, to make their own opinion of Verity. The local shops / pubs have benefited from this, so surely this can only be a good thing.”

“I know what you are saying maddogwoman but if I was to get engaged ( which won't ever happen )
I wouldn't want to do it in front of that grotesque object ...”

“I think it's nice to have some good news for a change. Instead of the usual battleground stories about wind turbines and dog owners. Wish them all the best for the future.”
