FORMER England cricketers Mike Gatting and Jack Russell were among 600 people who gathered to remember David Shepherd in Bristol today.

Russell Hillier, a fellow student at St Luke's College, Exeter, recalled Shep's prowess on the cricket field and dance floor.

Gloucestershire cricketer and fellow Devonian Jack Davey remembered a very special friend who was like a brother.

John Light, the Gloucestershire chairman, described the way Shep led his life as an example to everyone.

The service closed with prayers led by Revd Geoff Calway, the vicar of Instow and Westleigh.

Shep died last month aged 68 after a long battle with cancer.
