BRITAIN'S best junior surfers were at Fistral Beach, Newquay, over the weekend for the Billabong British Junior Championships — and it was North Devon girls who made the biggest splash.

Croyde Surf Club duo Laura Crane and Peony Knight reigned supreme as queens of the beach, claiming the under-18 and under-14 titles respectively.

Having initially been greeted by small, 1ft, ankle-biter waves, the conditions improved across the weekend, with Sunday offering 2ft peelers for the finalists.

Billabong rider Laura, from Georgeham, put in fine displays and really stepped it up to seal a memorable win in the under-18 girls, having last year won the under-14s title.

Keeping the under-14 title in North Devon, Peony put in a solid performance to beat Flora Lawton.

Alex Gibson did well but was unlucky in his final and suffered "one of those heats" when the waves just didn't come.

Billabong's Simon Tucker said: "The weekend was fantastic. The beach was full of spectators, live scores made the event so exciting and I would like to thank the BSA, Calypso and Fistral Blue for making the event possible. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2011."

Laura and Alex head to Spain this week as part of the Devon surf team for the Atlantic Watersport Games in Cantabria.

Consisting of champions old and new, the team hope to again do their country and county proud.

Lineup will be on hand to bring you all the news from the opening ceremony to the finals. It is Devon's second appearance at the games and the team are amped with the opportunity.

Isabelle Bromham, NEA2 watersports project officer, said: "I am delighted to see a North Devon representation at the Games, raising the profile of our talented athletes and of our region.

"I would like to thank all our sponsors for their support."

Taking on some of Europe's best surfers, it will be no easy task, with competition bringing together surf teams representing the most surf-rich areas on the Atlantic coast.

Laura Holt, marketing and PR manager for North Devon+, said: "Having the Devon flag flying among ten other Atlantic coast regions and fielding a high performance team will raise a positive awareness of North Devon and Exmoor."

Here is a heads-up to all surf aficionados, legendary Californian pro Joey Buran will premiere his new movie Beyond The Dream at Woolacombe's Methodist Church, Main Beach Road, on Tuesday.

The film traces his rise from humble origins to become one of surfing's greatest athletes.

Joey will also be holding several surf clinics on the same day, courtesy of Hunter.

They are open to any competitive surfers wishing to advance their skills.

With limited availability, surfers are encouraged to register early. Call 01271 871061.
