THE Tuesday coffee morning at Old Schools last week was in aid of Cancer Research UK.

A huge array of cakes, puddings, knitted Christmas decorations, and a raffle of surely record proportions, helped raise more than £1,000.

Hatherleigh residents are generous, not only with their money, but with their time and energy – all the hand-made and home-baked items didn't appear by magic.

A coffee morning was also held in Old Schools on Saturday and, in spite of competition from the Ruby Market, was well attended.

It was in aid of a new group set up to help find homes for abandoned dogs.

The Dartmoor View Dog Rescue group is providing a great service in the South West, taking dogs, which might otherwise be put down, from dog wardens, providing foster homes, until permanent homes can be found.

Funds are needed for injections, micro-chipping and food and Old Schools was full of tables laden with doggy gifts, home-made cakes and bric-a-brac, raising money for this cause.

In difficult times some families are finding it hard to keep their pets and Dartmoor View Dog Rescue is doing its best to help dogs which may suffer in these circumstances.

At least coffee mornings don't last all night – but Hatherleigh Football Club started their fundraising at 8pm on Friday last week and continued until 8pm on Saturday, pedalling stationary bikes for 24 hours.

Members of the club took turns to keep the wheels turning and passers-by were encouraged to donate and to purchase tickets for two hampers, overflowing with goodies, which were sat on the table beside the cyclists.

Players from both the first and second teams were doing half hour stints on the bikes – and presumably fundraising and keeping fit at the same time.

“How could Rover sit there so calmly without going for all that food?”
