Damaged Grand Western Canal to be re-stocked
A canal which burst its banks during torrential rain storms is to be restocked with thousands of fish.
The walls of the Grand Western Canal suffered a catastrophic breach near Halberton in Mid Devon earlier this month with two 100 feet sections giving way under the weight of water.
The Environment Agency said there had been a huge loss of fish with pike, eels, perch, bream, tench and roach all spilling out when water was siphoned into a field to prevent more of the canal wall collapsing. About 400 fish were recovered and returned to the waterway, which runs between Tiverton in Devon and Taunton in Somerset.
The agency said it had now begun an extensive restocking programme and would order about 2,000 of each species of fish lost every year until the canal was considered healthy.

Around 25 people from the agency and Tiverton Angling Club were involved in rescuing the fish. It is thought that hundreds of fish remain alive in the flooded field, but they are not likely to survive
