Damien Hirst's Verity statue sparks 277 letters to council
The Damien Hirst statue planned for Ilfracombe has attracted 177 letters in support and 100 letters of objection.
The artist is offering to lend his giant statue of a naked pregnant sword-wielding woman to the town for 20 years.

North Devon Council's planning committee will consider the planning application on Wednesday when they are being advised to approve it.
The council's planning officer says in a report: "The proposed development represents an important capital project for Ilfracombe and has the potential to act as a catalyst for further investment.

"In planning for the town's future the granting of planning permission for 'Verity' would demonstrate a positive approach to innovation that would add to the overall tourism offerand make a progressive contribution to local character and distinctiveness."
Objections to the statue include complaints that it is: outrageous and immoral, bizarre, obscene, offensive, disgusting, distasteful, embarrassing, grotesque, disrespectful, insensitive, inappropriate, a monstrosity, tasteless, ugly, vulgar and not in good taste.
Supporters say it is: thought provoking, stirring and unique; a beautiful, strong, controversial icon with the power to transform the town's future; beautiful, creative design of world class merit; controversy over design will generate positive publicity; the sculpturechallenges our perceptions and creates a dialogue.
A report to councillors says the new statue will be continuously monitored by a new CCTV camera.

“The bus station is unlikely to burn down again. If the cctv stops any more bodies being washed ashore all well and good. But the point here is the letters. I wonder who they are from? This is thought provoking if not a little tedious. The council have shown their attitude to their conservation area. Well, it was announced recently from a higher perch that planning applications were to be made easier. On the other hand, I have decided to wait until after the next local election to submit mine. We are starting elsewhere while Ilfracombe re-aligns itself with reality.
In the mean-time the fun and games continue!”
