THERE was an early morning wake up call for on-call firefighters in Ilfracombe on Saturday when they were called to rescue a dog trapped in a fence at a house in Regent Place.

The retained firefighters' pagers went off at 6.30am and after arriving at the scene they found 7-year-old collie Susie in distress, with her rear legs stuck in the gate of a fence.

Using small tools the crew was able to free the dog, who was rushed to Market vets in Barnstaple for surgery.

Diana Lewis, from North Devon Animal Ambulance, said Susie needed extensive surgery and had been signed over to the Animal Ambulance.

"The owner has 13 other dogs and can't cope," she said.

"Susie needs extensive surgery and a long convalescence which the owner can't provide so we'll be rehoming her once she's recovered.

"Her leg was a mess and she'd been hung up for several hours.

"The fire brigade did a superb job getting her out, they deserve recognition for that.

"It wasn't easy as she was in some distress."
