A £700,000 house in Westward Ho! is up for grabs in a raffle with a difference.

Sue and George Panis are offering their six-bedroom home as a prize in a competition that will raise cash for the Children's Hospice South West and charity Mind.

Fed up with the credit crunch and state of the property market, the couple are hoping to generate £800,000 from the competition, with £40,000 going to charity.

They are aiming to sell 40,000 tickets each priced at £20. £1 from each ticket will go to charity.

Sue said: "We had the idea a long time ago but we are not really computer buffs so we put it to the back of our minds. We then saw another couple in Devon doing something similar and that has spurred us into action.

"We now have a web designer on board and our website — www.winadevonmanor.co.uk — is up and running."

The couple have had the house on and off the market for a couple of years and two sales have fallen through.

They have owned the house for seven years and spent about £50,000 on improvements from a new designer kitchen to maintaining Victorian details of the building.

Sue said: "We are both in our 60s and want to scale down. The house is stunning with fantastic sea views as well as having all the original features, but we are both exhausted with it.

"I will be devastated to leave and wouldn't move but three bedrooms would be just fine and I don't want to run a B&B all my life."

The house, which was the former Broomhayes School, was a children's home in the 1950s.

It is now described as a detached six-bedroom, five-bathroom house with panoramic views over the sea and burrows. It has two reception rooms, a conservatory, snooker room, Jacuzzi and landscaped gardens and patios. As well as the main house, there is a one-bedroom annexe.

Sue said the couple have chosen the Children's Hospice South West, where she works, as she sees what a difference it makes to children and their families. The rest of the money raised for charity will go to Mind in Taunton and West Somerset.

Broomhayes Manor will be presented to the winner with all the letting rooms and apartment fully furnished. And the opportunity to continue running it as a guesthouse.

If the couple sell less than the 40,000 tickets hoped, the draw will still take place and the prize will be the total amount raised from the sale of tickets to the six month cut off, minus £1 a ticket for charity, and less all legitimate expenditure in running the competition.

The draw is set to take place on St Valentine's Day next year.
