Driver ‘blinded by sun’ as car hits lamppost on A361 near Braunton
The driver of a car which crashed into a lamppost on the A361 near Braunton yesterday evening told police he was ‘blinded by the sun’.
Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene at Velator at around 6pm after the silver Jaguar S-Type collided with a lamppost.

The driver, a man from Braunton, was uninjured in the crash.
Police said the vehicle leaked a large amount of oil onto the road and said the incident caused disruption for commuters for around one hour.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the driver told officers at the scene he had been blinded by the sun.
Highways crews were called to the scene to make the lamppost safe and repair the damage the crash had caused.
There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and the road was clear shortly after 7pm.

“Exactly! If someone crashed every single time the sun was shining at them, there would be an awful lot of accidents. The sun is a contributory factor but human error was the main cause.”

“Look at it this way - the A361 at Velator runs roughly from the North-West to the South-East. The sun would have virtually completely set by 6pm (a quick Google search suggests that sunset yesterday was at 18:12), and would have been in the South-West - to the side of the road whichever direction you travel. So, blinded by the sun? Or driving without due care and attention? I think R_Sole87 pretty much has it spot on...”
