A 74-year-old man from Chawleigh is in a critical condition at the Royal Devon and Exeter (RD&E) hospital after a crash near Umberleigh yesterday (Sunday, October 28).

The crash, which involved a silver Peugeot 307 estate from Chawleigh and a silver Citroen Picasso from Umberleigh, happened yesterday at 3pm yesterday on the A377 near the Kings Nympton railway station.

Two fire engines, two ambulances, several police cars, the British Transport Police and the Devon Air Ambulance all attended the scene.

The Citroen Picasso, which contained a male driver and his wife, crashed down a steep embankment and became wedged in trees around 20 feet above the Barnstaple to Exeter railway line.

The couple managed to escape from the vehicle but the railway line was closed for more than four hours.

The driver, who suffered two broken kneecaps and a broken elbow, was airlifted to RD&E.  His wife was described by police as walking wounded and was taken to North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) by land ambulance.  Police could not confirm the ages of the couple.

The Peugeot 307 remained on the road after the crash with one casualty reported as being trapped in the car.

The 74-year-old driver had to be cut out of the car by fire fighters.

Police said the man sustained multiple fractures including a badly broken leg.  He was airlifted to RD&E where he remains in intensive care in a critical condition.

The other passenger in the Peugeot 307, an 84-year-old woman who is also from Chawleigh, suffered minor cuts and bruises and was taken to RD&E by land ambulance.

A stretch of the A377 was closed after the crash and was reopened at around 1.30am on Monday, October 29.

The Barnstaple to Exeter railway line had to be closed temporarily at 10.50pm on Sunday so the Citroen Picasso could be safely removed.

Police confirmed there was a lot of standing water on the road.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Plymouth Serious Collisions Investigation Unit on 101 quoting log number 535 of October 28.
