Although police have not confirmed the man’s identity, he has been named locally as Bampton teenager Luke Lyons.

Formal identification of the body will take place today.

A missing person appeal was launched for Mr Lyons after he failed to turn up for work in Bideford on Friday morning.

It is understood he usually drives his silver Clio van to work, often along the A396 from Bampton, past East Anstey and onto the A361 North Devon Link Road at South Molton.

Messages posted on Twitter over the weekend appear to pay tribute to the 19-year-old.

Mr Lyon’s cousin, Holly Ford, wrote on Saturday morning: “Can't sleep. Brain has gone into overdrive. Trying to work out how this world can be so cruel. #impossible.”

Friend @Indiaabutt wrote: “I miss you bestfriend luke lyons already more than words can explain, i love you so much! Rest in peace<3<3”

@TaraCheetham posted: “Someone I know died today. I never believed we went somewhere after death. But now I really hope we do. R.I.P Luke Lyons”

And Codie Housam wrote: “RIP Luke Lyons. Thoughts are out to your family. u will be truely missed x”
