OLDER motorists in Devon are being encouraged to brush up their driving skills.

Devon County Council, Devon and Cornwall Police, and the Highways Agency are launching a campaign this week offering advice and support.

Keeping track of changes to the highway code and road signs, eyesight, memory, decision-making and reaction times are all under the spotlight.

A DVD and booklet called Driving Safer for Longer is being distributed.

Drivers over the age of 70 already have to re-apply for a driving licence.

Sergeant Glenn Bullock said: "The population of Devon is getting progressively older; by 2018 it is anticipated that 47% will be over the age of 50.

"The majority of senior motorists have made irreversible lifestyle choices built around the ownership and continued use of a car.
