OUR continued appetite for growing it ourselves will soon turn GIY into a better-known acronym that DIY.

So, with this zest for local and seasonal fruit and veg in mind, Rosemoor kicks off its 2010 Grow Your Own Campaign on Saturday with a special bargain entry fee of £1 for all over six — RHS members free — from 10am to 4pm. Under-sixes get in free and so does anyone who travels there by bus.

Home-grown produce not only tastes better, it has zero food miles and generally contains fewer chemicals than shop-bought stuff. The process of cultivating and nurturing plants creates a satisfying feeling of empathy with the land.

Many people like the idea of GIY but are not sure where to start, so the special day is a perfect place to be inspired by the experts with plenty for the seasoned gardener, too.

The open day gives everyone a chance to get one-to-one advice from RHS pundits, as well as talks, planting demos, garden walks, fruit and veg displays and tips from the National Vegetable Society.

Activities such as seed sowing will be geared towards keeping the kids happy.

And did you know:

● Beans are the easiest and fastest veg to grow, according to a recent RHS survey.

● Apples and strawberries top the list of most commonly grown fruit in Britain's gardens.

● There are more than 7,500 varieties of tomato.

● If space is squeezed, many fruit and veg can be grown in containers or even a window box.
