A COUNCILLOR has claimed that fat, lazy adults are turning a stretch of road near a primary school into a danger spot.

Ilfracombe Town Councillor Frank Pearson said the area near the Infants School on Marlborough Road is regularly flooded with parents parking illegally during the school rush hour. He said it leads to single lane traffic, congestion and a lack of visibility in an area frequented by young children.

Mr Pearson, urged the authorities to take action after a child was allegedly hit by a car last month.

He said: "Historically I have been aware of traffic problems along that road but recently the situation has become far worse.

"There have been several close calls where cars have hit buggies and push chairs. Last week I was told a child was hit by a car, though fortunately no injuries were sustained."

He said: "Incidents like these are only inches away from causing serious injury or even death – and for what? To save some fat adults from walking 200 metres a day, are they prepared to trade a child's life?"

"When the fateful day arrives they will no doubt salve their guilt by buying a bunch of flowers."

Mr Pearson said North Devon Council's civil parking enforcement officers did not regularly patrol the area or give out tickets to motorists parked illegally.

Nigel Young, North Devon Council's parking services officer, said the council was aware of the issue and patrolled the street on a regular basis.

He said: "We will obviously keep our enforcement going at the location on a regular basis."

“It irks me when the likes of "Grumpygutz" castigate people because their typing skills and spelling skills are not one hundred percent. People who take the trouble to respond to the issues that concern them should be thanked and not abused. "Grumpygutz" would do well to consider the fact that there are people who miss out on schooling because of ill-health or family breakdown. Furthermore, there are horses for courses, and typing and spelling are not everyone's forte.”

“What a shame that Mr Pearson has approached this problem in this way.
I agree that this is an issue not just in Ilfracombe but at most schools and I think the best way to approach it is through education. Working with parents and actively teaching children about road safety outside of the classroom is much more likely to reduce the risks.
If our councillors took appropriate action in response to these concerns, schemes could be set up to encourage more children to walk to school. Councils in other areas run successful schemes which would also work well here.
Local councillors labelling parents 'fat' and 'lazy' may be considered front page news but it certainly won't solve the problem.”

“It is the same problem outside any primary school in North Devon. Sticklepath School in Barnstaple has huge problems with dangerous parking outside of the school. Will the council or police listen? No is the answer. What will it take - a child to be killed before something is done!”

“Yes,they are probably in a 4 wheel drive vehicle the size of a tank as well, taking up most of the road, totally unaware of their surroundings.”
