SAILING

NORTH Devon Yacht Club's season started on Saturday in bright sunshine but with precious little wind.

Despite the calm conditions, competition was fierce and there was a good turnout.

John Farr, with his daughter as crew, led from start to finish to head the fast cat fleet.

In the sprint 15s, several competitors attempted the tricky course set by Ian Atkinson. Barry Vincent took the honours from Keith Heason who might have done better had he not brushed a marker.

Richard Hentell took the lead for a short while before his course management let him down, and Dane Stanley looked threatening on occasions but his old sails did not perform.

Hugh Kingdon came first in the handicap one fleet, while A Robinson, sailing his solo, won the handicap two category. Lisa Thomas was first across the line in her Laser.

On Sunday, Thom and Poppy Flaxman triumphed in the fast cats. Anthony Gray won the sprint 15s and Hugh and Paula Kingdon led the handicap ones.
