Firefighters sent to rescue cow from slurry pit in Merton
Two fire crews spent this morning trying to rescue a cow from a slurry pit at a farm in Merton.
The farmer called emergency services before 9am this morning to say the cow was stuck in 2 foot of slurry at Grange Farm near Okehampton.

One fire engine from Hatherleigh and the specialist rescue team from Barnstaple Fire Station attended the incident. A vet was also called to the scene.
There was only one cow involved.

The crews on scene initially used a gas detection monitor to check for harmful gases that can be found incidents involving slurry, however none were detected.
Once the cow had been sedated by a local vet the specialist rescue team used specialist rescue equipment and farm machinary to rescue the cow to a place of safety.
