Fox hunting 'tradition'
CONGRATULATIONS to both the Journal for publishing that delightful picture of the two fox cubs (Viewpoint, North Devon Journal, August 5, 2010) and to Katie Symons of Georgeham for managing to capture such an unusual and charming photograph in her back garden. I am sure it could be an award-winning photograph.
This was particularly welcome at a time when the media seems to be waging an anti fox campaign. I was absolutely horrified to receive literature from The League Against Cruel Sports explaining why this year's fox cubs are in great danger.
Apparently, "cub hunting" is an activity which traditionally starts in August and continues till mid October. I believe its primary purpose is to train young foxhounds to kill foxes and give them a taste for blood. This is because the hounds are not fox killers by nature and for hunts that are still hunting foxes illegally, despite the ban, it is important that the hounds are trained to know which animals they are expected to chase and kill.
The pack is usually taken at first light or in the evening to a small wood or "covert" where a family of foxes are known to live. The hunt supporters surround the covert and any cubs that attempt to escape are driven back towards the hounds to be savaged. If any cubs remain in their earths they are dug out and given to the hounds.
What follows are, in my opinion, some of the most horrific acts of cruelty to animals. Cubs scatter in terror and panic, absolutely petrified as they meet their agonising, prolonged deaths. They are literally ripped to pieces, with desperate vixens unable to save them from their fates. Normal human beings cannot comprehend what these sick individuals get out of watching fox cubs and their mothers being tortured in this way. The farming community should hang their heads in shame and assist in stamping out this illegal "tradition".
I understand that our MP Nick Harvey and some of our leading prospective parliamentary candidates in the recent elections support hunting. Perhaps it would be appropriate to have their comments on this wicked "tradition".
If you have any information on cub hunters' plans in your area, please call the Hunt Crimewatch line on 01483 524250. Incidentally, I shall not be re subscribing to any groups or charities when my yearly memberships are due, but will be joining The League Against Cruel Sports.
