A NORTH Devon Community Group is set to open its own pub in the village hall months after the village pub closed down.

Fremington and District Community Group is set to open its community pub for the first time later this month in a move designed to bring people in the village together.

The move comes around three or four months after the Fox and Hounds, one of two pubs in the village, shut down.

Community group chair and local councillor Frank Biederman said he hoped the move would be as successful as the annual Party at the Manor, which the group also runs.

"The idea is for it to be something which brings different groups together," he said.

"We still have the New Inn in the village, which is a great pub for food but it's not really somewhere to get together, it's not ideally suited to that.

"So we're not doing this to be opposition to the New Inn, we're just looking to provide something that's been missing in the village for a few months."

The as yet un-named community pub will open its doors for the first time on January 26, when the Community Group, with help from Fremington Football Club, will host a quiz and curry night.

Further dates hosted with help from Fremington primary School's PTFA and the Friends of St Peter's Church are planned for February and March.

"We'll be getting a temporary event license for the pub," said Frank. "We can get up to ten each year although we already use one to sell mulled wine at the Christmas tree switch on.

"We'll probably be looking to do about half a dozen pub openings though."

Frank said he was keen to see how much interest there may be in the idea.

"We need to find different ways to raise vital funds for different groups in the village," he said.

"This is just another way and hopefully it will bring people together as well."
